(West) Map of the United States and Their Territories between the Mississippi and the Pacific Ocean and Part of Mexico compiled from surveys made under the order of W.H. Emory... 1857-58,
The boundary negotiations concluding the war with Mexico were a fiasco because the parties did not possess accurate maps of the region. This map, similar to Warrens great map of the west but smaller, was designed to rectify that situation. It carefully selects what accurate data exists, ignores the inaccurate and adjusts the in-between to create one of the earliest accurate maps of the west. The explored regions, largely the product of the Army Surveys, are shown clearly and sharply. The unexplored regions are labeled as such and left substantially blank save a desultory river or two. A superb map getting very scarce. Short tear repaired verso. Wheat 826. The is an uncolored embossed stamp on one edge Very good example.
