(New Mexico - Texas) Reconnaissances in New Mexico and Texas &c.

A early landmark study of this portion of the Southwest which looks at native cultures throughout this frontier area and includes two important maps for the region. With reports that document the travels through the region, as well as native information and that of previous explorers, it is an in depth but engaging read. The two maps are the "Reconnoissances of Routes from San Antonio De Bexar El Paso Del Norte..." which spans from the Texas coast, right through to just beyond the 34th parallel, capturing roads, routes and placenames throughout. The second large folding map is the amazing map by Simpson titled, "Map of the Route Pursued in 1849 by the U.S. Troops, under the Command of Bvt. Lieut. Col. Jno M. Washington, Governor of New Mexico, in an Expedition against the Navajo Indians..." It is an early gem that illustrates the heart of New Mexico, from the the towns along the Rio Grande, from Peralta, up to Santa Fe, and just beyond Taos, then spanning west to Canon De Chelly and neighboring areas. Also included in the text are a wealth of early lithographs, some hand colored, that look at the landscape, natives, native culture and even early hieroglyphs.

Condition is good with some foxing, and a repaired opening tear to the Texas map. The binding is tight and clean. The folding map of Texas is 24.5 x 36, the New Mexico is 20.5 x 27.5 (inches)
